Mark and Carol Coil, along with sons, Ryan and Reed, moved from the southwestern suburbs of Minneapolis, to the resort in 1988. The entire family has contributed to the running of the resort over the years. Mark has remodeled and maintains the cabins. Carol cleans the cabins and takes care of the paperwork. Both boys learned to paint, use a hammer and spent many mornings bailing out the boats.

Mark is also employed as a Customer Service Representative at L & M Radiator in Hibbing. He enjoys hunting, fishing and gardening. Carol, a school bus driver for ISD 318, enjoys sewing, gardening, reading and watching Twins baseball.

Ryan, a University of Minnesota graduate, lives and works in Omaha, Nebraska. Reed, a graduate of Wisconsin - Superior, lives in Minneapolis and is currently a graduate student at the University of Minnesota.

Also at Birch Haven, Nellie and Gracie, two black Labrador retrievers, will welcome your arrival and be your new best friend if you throw a ball for them to fetch. There are also two house cats, but as cats go, they like to keep out of sight.

Cabin 1 - 1988

The first of the cabins at Birch Haven was built in 1940's. An early story of the resort business is that of a hunter who decided to build a fire in the middle of one of the beds.

Birch Haven has seen numerous owners over the years. The Coil's have remodeled their home, all the cabins, added decks and replaced the dock in their time at the resort.
